Burgin of way nesville spent the weekend here with relatives and friends. She was formerly Miss Gladys Axley. Mrs. Henry Axley returned a few days ago after spending several months with relatives in Georgia. Mrs. John Davidson left Sunday for Indianapolis, Ind., to join her husband, who is stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison. Mrs. Doyle Burch and daughter, Betty Lou, are visit ing relatives and friends in Morristown, Tenn. Mrs. Homer Ricks and daughter, Frances, arrived last week from Akron, Ohio, for a visit with relatives and friends. Mrs. J. H. Duncan and child ren spent the weekend in Clay ton, Ga. WINCHESTER Mr. and Mrs. Gus Win chester of Atlanta, announce the birth of a son, Bruce Dwayne, at Georgia Baptist Jake Jordan and (he late Mr. Jordan of Murphy. Sherry has been anepiod for the Americans Abroad program of the American Field Service and Is the only one of several local appli cants to be accepted. Sherry will live with the family of civil engineer Nicoloas loannides of the New Smyrna section of Athens. The family spends the emir* summer on the island of Aegina, which is one and a half hours out from the Port of Piraeus. The loannides household in cludes three daughters, Lla, 17; Sophie, 15; both of whom speak English "fairly well", and Christina, 9. The grand parents on die father^ side live with the family but do not go to the island for the summer. The family also has a 12-year-old maid. Sherry left New York by boat Friday, June 26, and went directly to Athens. She will return to the United States September 16, and will miss the first couple weeks of school. The loannides family like excursions, swimming, water skiing and sailing. They also enjoy light, classical and jazz music. Hawkins Is Commissioned As Ensign MURPHY - Charles David Hawkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gay Hawkins of Route 4, Mur phy was recently commis sioned as Ensign in the U. S. Naval Reserve. Ensign Hawkins was among the many commissioned grad uates who completed the inten sive sixteen - week officer training course at the U. S. Naval Officer Candidate School, U. S. Naval Base, Newport, Rhode Island. Graduateion exercises were held June 19 with the Hon. Kenneth E. Believ, Assistant Secretary of the Navy deliv ering the graduation address. Ensign Hawkins is a 1963 graduate of Western Carolina College where he was award ed a Masters Degree in Edu cation. For his first assignment Hawkins will report to the USS Dodge County for duty.
